Monty Mittleman is an emerging poet and will have his first chapbook, Recalibrations, published
by Finishing Line Press, August 2026. He is retired from the Illinois Department of Corrections
and is a licensed EMT. He lives in Decatur, IL.

SAND WASH BASIN HMA
There’s sailor’s blood in your veins and that’s always an excuse for adventure. We headed west
because sailors seek wind and came to rest on the shores of a pastel sagebrush sea. Moving with
a sandy current, we floated from one summit to the next. Two love birds, abraded by rocky
reefs, desiring to be albatross.
