About Beth

Beth Langdon is originally from Freeport and came to Decatur to attend Millikin University, graduating with a degree in Biology in 1982. She then attended Northwestern University and received a degree in Physical Therapy and returned to Decatur to work. She mainly practiced Physical therapy in-home care, initially for the Visiting Nurse Association and then for St. John’s Home Care out of the St. Mary’s office. At that time she could tell you the location of every pay phone and where every back road led!

In 2017, she retired and began pursuing other interests including writing. Having dabbled in poetry throughout her life, she started taking it more seriously recently, often taking on a spiritual tone.

She feels many of the poems are “inspired” and often wakes in the night with a line or two in her head and then she “just runs with it”. In 2022, she worked with her church, Mt. Calvary Lutheran in Decatur, and published a book of poetry entitled, From My Heart to Yours. Since then, she has been writing several poems a week and has gathered enough for another book.

A Lift

There once was a tree as strong as could be

But it only grew to reach two foot three

It was mighty in structure and had beautiful leaves

Its limbs swayed freely with the wind and the breeze

Her leaves were colorful and bright

To all that saw her it brought deep delight

She wanted to be tall and look all around

Instead, she barely rose above the ground Disappointment and pain were part of her life For who could imagine her struggle and strife?

Along one day came a bird all in brown

That needed a place up off the ground

But the bird had hurt a wing and could not fly And it needed a tree that wasn’t so high!

To the bird, the small tree was such a gift Even the tree felt an emotional lift!

The tree had felt she had so little to give

Instead, she provided a shelter for the bird to live.

They came to find that in mutual need

Their weakness would help them each to succeed For wherever in life weaknesses abound Then surely there is strength waiting to be found!

Perhaps this is God's perfect gift...

In others, we find a needed lift.
